"The
land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community
to include soils, waters, plants and animals, or collectively: the
land."

This
great idea came from Patrick J. Chicas.
Here's a nice alternative that you can use when the site you
are in doesn't allow campfires on the ground. Take an old washing
machine drum and some pipe along with an old plow disk and you've got a
portable fireplace that is hardy and easy to use. Weld the pipe
to the plow disc for a base and then put a sleeve on the pipe in the
appropriate place to hold the washer drum up so it doesn't get stuck on
the pipe. the hardest part of putting this together is to get the
right size of pipe. Old plow discs are available at your local
farm implement dealer or a farmer friend. The washer tub came
from a local used appliance dealer.
Variations can have the legs welded to the washer tub . . . which makes
it a little harder to store. Or you can weld a pipe base to the
tub and screw in the legs . . . which has a problem with the threads on
the legs getting damaged in transit. Put a grill over the tub and
you're ready to grill.
Helpful Hints: Some drums have a center tube that needs to cut
out using a dye grinder. The best tub is a stainless steel type
found in Speed Queen washers. Avoid newer tubs with composite or
plastic tubs. For extra lateral heat drill 3/4" holes on center
with the existing holes around the side.
