National Park Service

"The national park is the best idea America ever had."
-- James Bryce, British ambassador to the U.S., 1912

By 1916 the Interior Department was responsible for 14 national parks and 21 national monuments but had no organization to manage them. To correct this problem, President Woodrow Wilson approved legislation creating the National Park Service on 8/25/1916. The National Park System now includes 388 parks that cover the length and breadth of America.
